Dr. Mark Meyer, the President of Shoulder to Shoulder Pittsburgh/San Jose and a faculty member at the University of Pittsburgh, is currently the Principal Investigator on an new and exciting research project in San Jose. Improving Nutrition and Health Outcomes in Yoro, Honduras is studying the impact of a comprehensive nutrition program. Parents of children, ages 6 months to 6 years, in the Shoulder to Shoulder San Jose region will be offered the supplement Chispuditos. The Mathile Institute for the Advancement of Human Nutrition developed Chispuditos to fulfill the need for a culturally accepted, cost effective, micro-nutrient fortified, nutritional supplement that could help alleviate malnutrition. In addition to the dietary supplement, the program provides educational sessions and close monitoring of the children’s growth and health. Since the study’s start in Fall 2011, over 1,500 children have been enrolled in this research project. This research project is funded by the Mathile Insitute and approved by the University of Pittsburgh Institutional Review Board.
